Hi all! Because I’ve had a lot of new followers lately, I decided I wanted to do a list of ten likes and dislikes of mine in an effort to get to know you all better. Respond with your own interests and pet peeves. Tell me things you like and dislike! Tell me if we share anything in common. I’d love to hear from you all.

Ten Likes

  1. Reading: That’s probably a really obvious one based on…well everything. But writing has been my favorite thing since I was a little girl. It was my escape from struggles. It was my reward for accomplishments. From comics to short stories to books to magazines, I truly enjoy reading.
  2. Writing. Duh.

  3. Music. Nearly any kind. I don’t think there’s a single genre where I don’t have one song I like.
  4. Compelling stories. Comics. Especially Batman and the Batfamily but really everything. DC, Marvel, Image, Darkhorse, whatever. When someone pops up with that question “What can you teach a lecture on with no preparation?” The answer is probably the Batfamily. Television/Movies: Buffy, Farscape, Stargate, Stranger Things, Voltron: Legendary Hero, Dragon Ball Z, My Hero Academia. I just love good stories.
  5. Kindness: People who uplift those around them and help others, people who genuinely care. Those are my kryptonite. I’d do anything for you if you’d do anything for others.
  6. People who don’t take themselves too seriously. Like, have fun. Be casual. Kill the ego and let go.

  7. Animals. All of them. I have three cats, but I love dogs too…and rodents. And birds. And lizards. And turtles. It’s probably a good thing I have an apartment and limits on my animal collections.
  8. Passion. And I’m not just talking about passion. I just love watching people be passionate about things they enjoy, things that excite them. I like people who can’t contain themselves, who use foul language, who are unapologetic. I like genuine excitement.
  9. COFFEE. I don’t know if this counts as a like. It’s more a need.
  10. Good Food. And no, I don’t mean good for you. I’m talking about cheese and mint chocolate, and hamburgers, and truffles…

Ten Dislikes

If I really go on this, I’d write a lot of obvious stuff like racism, sexism, homophobia, criminals,  etc. But I want to be a little more specific to my own situation, so I’m trying to be less general here.

  1. Men who instantly think I don’t know about comics because I’m a woman. I will prove you wrong and you will feel stupid. And I won’t feel bad about it at all.
  2. When people assume that being bisexual means I’ll cheat on my husband. Come on, people. Monogamy and sexuality are not related.
  3. When people don’t believe you don’t like a food. Have you tried it? YES. I’m not eight. I try a thing before I declare my dislike of it.
  4. Grapefruits. I never liked the taste. When I was pregnant, the smell of them made me nauseated, and it never went away.
  5. Judgmental people. Man, just let people do what they enjoy doing. If it doesn’t hurt you, why do you care? There are so many ways to apply this one. A big one is…if I ship a couple in fanfic, if I like a movie you didn’t like…can you just, like, let me? Does that dim your shine, somehow?
  6. The NYC Subway. I had nearly two years off from riding it and I hate it. Somehow my back always hurts after I ride it. Sitting, standing, doesn’t matter.
  7. While on that topic, being disabled. Being disabled sucks. And being invisibly disabled doesn’t suck more by any means, but it sucks in a different way. Because people don’t believe me when I say I’m disabled. They either say I don’t look sick, or they say I’m too young. It’s really incredible how ignorant otherwise perfectly reasonable people can be about some topics. Perhaps my real dislike here is ignorance? Or perhaps that’s more a HATE than a dislike.
  8. People who don’t accept no. No is a full sentence, people. And I’m not just talking about the BIG “no is no” women probably immediately thought of. We’re talking about people who ask you WHY you can’t make it to the office party or why you don’t want to come for happy hour or why you didn’t answer the phone when they called. Because I can’t. Because I couldn’t. Because I didn’t want to. That should be enough. You shouldn’t have to explain yourself to anyone.
  9. Schedule interruptions. I’m not sure what that’s about. It definitely has something to do with my neurodiversity. I definitely have ADHD, but since my son was diagnosed with autism, I’ve started to wonder if that has something to do with it. But all I know is I have hours where I do certain things and hours where I do NOT. And while I won’t get angry at people who interrupt the hours where I’m doing something else, because I don’t expect someone to know my schedule, I get unreasonably annoyed when I tell someone I’m doing something and they don’t care. It doesn’t matter if it seems silly. Unless it’s an emergency, it’s my time to do that thing. I can’t switch gears that easily.
  10. People who decide any genre of writing is not a real genre or a real way to write. Any age group is less than. Any writer is less professional than them or is inherently less quality than anybody else because of something as arbitrary as which fantasy land they like to visit. We’re all dreamers. Let our dreams lead us wherever they wish.

So what are your likes and dislikes? I’d love to learn more about you the way you’ve learned about me! Share!
